NORTH JERSEY, SECTION 1 QUARTERFINALS

West Caldwell Tech does it again

Another round, another upset for 12th-seeded West Caldwell Tech. Just two days after knocking off fifth-seeded Wayne Valley, the team was at it again and upset fourth-seeded Teaneck 22-25, 25-21, 25-14 to move on to the semifinals.

Jayson Camacho was terrific in all facets of the game, recording 13 kills, 15 assists and three blocks. Those three blocks were part of a massive game that saw the team record over 15 blocks once again. Christian Prophete had nine kills of his own, while Brian Caceres and Michael Torres added seven apiece.

West Caldwell Tech heads to the semifinals with five wins in its last six games.

Manuel Peralta was terrific for Teaneck with 16 kills and Raymond Dundon added 10 with 12 assists. Michael D’Onofrio had a team-high 20 assists.

Passaic handles Paterson Eastside in three

Both teams earned head-to-head wins in two matches this season so it was only fitting the third would go the distance.

Eight kills apiece from Bryan Aquino and Kendell Malloy helped steer third-seeded Passaic to a 25-13, 22-25, 25-18 win over sixth-seeded Paterson Eastside. Fernando Paredes and Joseph Vazquez combined for nine more kills in the win and Anthony Lorenzo had 26 assists.

The team did their best to contain George Gonzalez but you can only do so much, as the senior went off for 15 kills. Gonzalez’s season ended with 427 kills and only recorded fewer than 10 in just one of 29 matches. Alberto Torres had 21 assists and picked up a team-high four aces.

Bloomfield knocks off Belleville in three

Christian Voicu and James Bonilla could not be contained and combined for 33 kills, 20 coming from Voicu, to lead second-seeded Bloomfield to a three-set win against seventh-seeded Belleville.

Bloomfield took the first set 25-16 but Belleville fought back with a thrilling 32-30 win in game two to force a third set. Bloomfield then took the match with a 25-16 win in the third.

Dante Gibbs chipped in with eight kills and Jayson Lopez recorded a season-high 40 assists. As a team, Bloomfield recorded seven blocks.

Justine Cortez, Adrielle Henson, David Mejia and Justin Sison combined for 19 kills for Belleville. Cody Weng had 18 assists. Henson led a strong defensive effort with six of his team’s 11 blocks.

Fair Lawn rolls past Jefferson

For the second consecutive match, Fair Lawn did not surrender more than nine points in a set and rolled to a 25-7, 25-7 victory.

Mark Berry racked up 11 kills and Jack Centeno added six. Gil Zyndorf picked up 22 assists.

The win sends the Cutters into the semifinals where it will face a rolling West Caldwell Tech team.

JT Wojcik was held to five kills for Jefferson and Logan Kandel had eight assists.
