Los Angeles police shoot, kill suspect during confrontation
Los Angeles police shot and killed a man armed with a sharp weapon in Van Nuys Saturday afternoon after receiving reports of an attack on two women, a police spokesman said.
Officers responded to reports that a suspect was “stabbing or cutting” victims around 1 p.m. in the 6400 block of Tyrone Avenue, said LAPD Sgt. Frank Preciado.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found a male suspect armed with a sharp weapon, he said.
“There wasn’t an opportunity to de-escalate the situation,” Preciado said. “Whenever someone is assaulting someone with a sharp weapon — great bodily injury or death — officers are forced to take action. As a result there was an officer-involved shooting.”
The suspect, believed to be in his 30s, was transported to a local hospital, where he died of his injuries, Preciado said.
Two female victims were taken to the hospital but their conditions are not known, he said.
