Transport Canada launches inspection blitz in Sechelt Inlet

Porpoise Bay
Old Ferry
This former ferry which has been the subject of complaints to police and Transport Canada was among the first inspected in a recent sweep of the Porpoise Bay area.

Sunshine Coast RCMP say officers have been assisting teams from Transport Canada with an inspection blitz targeting boats anchored in, and around, Porpoise Bay.

Constable Karen Whitby said the RCMP role has been mainly to use their boat to help the Transport Canada inspectors get to and from the vessels as they look for safety and environmental concerns.

Whitby said a large decommissioned ferry that’s been at anchor near Poise Island was among the first vessels inspected.  She said there was no cause for criminal charges, but Transport Canada has issued an order requiring the owner to deal with safety issues within 30 days.

Transport Canada has not commented on the results of the other inspections.

Whitby said the Transport Canada teams expect to be out on the water for the next few days.
