Local Stockholm Talent to Star in Cinderella

Sussex Tech Drama Club to stage Cinderella The Musical

Stockholm - Local Stockholm talent will appear in Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella. 14-year-old Madeline Lupi, will play the lead role of Charlotte, one of two Stepsisters, in Sussex Tech Drama Club's Cinderella, which will be staged Mar 8, 9 and 10 for a limited 3 show engagement.

Cinderella is known as the classic rags-to-riches story about an orphaned girl who is mistreated by her stepmother and stepsisters, until she meets her fairy godmother who helps her find her true love. However, some reviewers posit that R&H's "Cinderella is not merely a kind maiden in distress, but a curious young woman becoming aware of injustices beyond her own shabby treatment," and she uses her new-found voice to protest the government's policies to Prince Topher. In addition, the cruel stepsisters, Charlotte and Gabrielle, find their sympathetic selves and are forgiven and embraced by the new Princess, Ella. This contemporary musical updates the old-fashioned version to the delight of enlightened girls and women everywhere.

Madeline says, "I wanted to be an evil stepsister because I really gravitate toward characters that have a lot of sass and self-determination." Director Jaime Villani explains, "I chose this piece because not only is it a classic fairy tale, but it tells the story of how acts of kindness often show someone's true beauty and that even amidst hard times never stop dreaming because dreams can come true."

Originally presented on television in 1957 starring Julie Andrews, Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella was twice re-made, first in 1965 for Lesley Ann Warren and then again in 1997 featuring Brandy and Whitney Houston. The original Broadway production opened in 2013.
