Many members of the 12th Man would likely claim they’re the most hardcore of Seahawks fans, but the honor of being the truest 12 probably should go to the Seattle area family that carries the name.
Gail Twelves and her daughter Laurel Twelves-Stebbins tell KIRO Radio’s Dori Monson they were Seahawks fans long before their last name gained them a unique status among fans.
“I grew up watching football with my dad,” says Laurel. “I’ve been a Seahawks fan my entire life. My boyfriend and I have season tickets. It’s just an added bonus to be part of the Twelves family.”
Gail says the name is Welsh and she really didn’t take notice of the whole 12th Man thing until people started referring to it as “the twelves.”
“Every time I read that or I would see the 12s, which is also my business logo mark, that’s where you’re like wait a minute, they’re talking about our family.”
The family couldn’t be prouder to share a name that identifies so much with the 12th Man, which Gail notes is one of the most effective fan bases in football.
“I marvel at the huge commitment and the energy behind our 12th Man because they personify the 12th Man, they personify really being a member of the team and they’ve impacted some plays.”
Monson asked if they ever thought about suing the Seahawks to protect the rights to their name, but Gail says, no, her mother taught her to share.
To all the fans that now refer to themselves as “Twelves,” Gail welcomes them.
“Now we just have an extended family, don’t we.”
