Opening chapter for this new series, starring rock singer-writer Glenn Frey as p.i. Cody McMahon, focuses on three cases at a rat-a-tat-tat tempo that doesn’t disguise the awkward writing and blah direction. Frey would be wise to go back to the tonsil trade.
It’s a moot point, anyway, since the series was canceled after only one primetime airing Oct. 27, garnering only a 6.1 rating/9 share in Nielsens. Due to coverage of Southland fires, CBS didn’t air the show in L.A. that night, instead playing it Saturday night. Late. And review copies had not been made available.
McMahon is a down-at-the-heels detective, with wannabe-actress Gina (Maria Pitillo) as his assistant and convicted car thief Ziggy Duane (Aries Spiers in a vigorous interp) as his sassy aide.
Actors Beah Richards, Tony Plana, Season Hubley, Nicolas Surovy and Nicolas Coster were brought into this preem episode, but their presence couldn’t help.

The show is rife with tasteless dialogue; uses an opening teaser of a young woman oozing blood after being shot in the abdomen; continues with joshing about gang shootings; and includes an ugly seg in which Spiers pretends to be a U.S. president assassinated in a convertible.
Tech credits are weak, but the title song briefly warbled by Frey is good.
