Woman killed in Haakon County crash identified
A woman killed in a crash near Philip that injured three other people last Friday has been identified.
South Dakota Highway Patrol spokesman Tony Mangan said Norma Marroquin-Ruiz, a 36-year-old woman from Blunt, died after the 2005 Chevy Silverado pickup she was riding in collided with a Ford Edge pulling a boat.
The crash happened on U.S. Highway 14, about nine miles east of Philip. The driver of the Silverado, 32-year-old Julio Vasquez-Rodriguez of Blunt, tried to pass the Ford Edge and crashed into it, Mangan said. The Silverado rolled and landed on its roof.
Marroquin-Ruiz died at the scene of the crash, while Vasquez-Rodriguez and two other passengers — a 12-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy, both from Blunt — were seriously injured but are expected to recover.
The driver of the Ford Edge, 30-year-old Nicole Young of Pierre, was not hurt.
