Driving To Grandma's Marathon? Expect 'Heavy Traffic'

The annual Grandma's Marathon is this Saturday. If you're driving to Duluth, here's what you should know.

DULUTH, MN — The annual Grandma’s Marathon is scheduled Saturday, June 17. It is one of Duluth’s biggest events, attracting 50,000 to 60,000 visitors each year. The Minnesota Department of Transportation expects heavy traffic levels on Interstate 35 in the days prior-to and after the marathon events, which officially begin Thursday.

On I-35 from just south of Willow River to just north of Sturgeon Lake

Traffic is restricted to a single lane in each direction and motorists may encounter short duration ramp closures at County Road 43 and County Road 46. Backups are expected, according to a news release.

On I-35 at Highway 61 in Carlton County

The northbound lanes are closed. Traffic is using the southbound lanes in a head-to-head configuration. Backups are expected. Highway 61/London Road and the North Shore Scenic Highway will be closed during the race on Saturday.
