LEAVITTSBURG, Ohio – Several samples of water from Bascom Elementary in Leavittsburg, Ohio have come back with high levels of lead in them.

The school district said in a letter to parents that samples were sent for testing back on February 12. About 12 of the 100 samples had elevated levels of lead.

The LaBrae School District contacted the Trumbull County Health Department and said they will contact the Ohio EPA on Friday.

The school said the following about what they will do going forward:

-Drinking fountain bubblers on the sinks in Bascom classrooms are not being used. Our custodial staff is in the process of disconnecting the water supply to these fixtures. Faucets on the classroom sinks will be flushed each morning, ensuring that any level of contaminant in the fixture and line is further reduced by the flushing process
-All drinking fountains in the gyms and halls, five in total, will be flushed each morning prior to students entering the building
-The water supply in the cafeteria used for food preparation will be flushed each morning prior to use in the preparation process
-Teachers have been instructed to direct students to the drinking fountains in their respective hall
-The District will be consulting with the Health Department and the Ohio EPA over the next several days as test results continue to be received by the District

The school said that while they continue to gather information, students are permitted to bring water bottles to class. Once all results are completed, the LaBrae School District will share them with the community and be posted on the district website.
