Residents have been evacuated from the Ayrshire village of Gatehead as a result of a major fire at a local coach works.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after the alarm was raised at 8.05pm on Sunday evening after huge flames engulfed the building and smoke was seen billowing across the sky.

And locals have been told to leave their homes as a precaution as a stockpile of gas canisters are stored at the site of the fire.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed there are four appliances in attendance as the firefighters continue to tackle the flames.

There are no casualties reported.

The coach house lies beside a major railway line and a level crossing located in the centre of the village.

The village of Gatehead is within three miles of Kilmarnock town centre

Stagecoach have also confirmed local bus services have been diverted as a result of the fire.

Gatehead, in East Ayrshire, is approximately three miles from Kilmarnock town centre and a mile from Crosshouse hospital.
