Jose Mourinho axed by Manchester United just ten days after Jorge Mendes said SunSport’s sacking reports were ‘untrue’

JOSE MOURINHO has been axed by Manchester United just over a week after his agent revealed the club were happy with his management.

The Red Devils' 3-1 defeat at Liverpool was the final straw for the board with the Champions League hopefuls 11 points adrift of the top four.

SunSport exclusively revealed that Mourinho was on the brink of the sack earlier this month with Mauricio Pochettino targeted as his No1 replacement.

We confirmed that the Tottenham manager is the club's only contender and they are willing to fork out up to £40million to lure him away from London.

Despite our report, his super agent Jorge Mendes claimed it was all rumours and reports were "totally untrue."

He added that: "Jose is very happy at the club and the club is very happy with him."

Mourinho was forced to distance himself away from the comments made by Mendes.

Quizzed about the statement, Mourinho said: "I have nothing to do with the statement. It is Jorge's statement, not my statement.

"I didn't know [it was coming] and I don't care about it."

United will now be looking for an interim boss until the end of the season before appointing a permanent manager.

They face a battle with Real Madrid over Poch and despite the current turmoil, they believe they can sell the Red Devils as the more attractive proposition.

Poch is determined to lead Spurs into their new stadium in the new year and signed a five-year, £8m-a-season deal only last summer.

He turned down United in 2016 when they fired Louis van Gaal but circumstances have changed at Spurs after he was given no funds to sign any players over the summer.

He knows that if he becomes United boss, he will be handed a transfer war chest to mount a serious title challenge.
