As Burlingame Is Covered In Smoke, Check Here For School Closures

The San Mateo County Office of Education wants to help keep you up-to-date on closure information.

BURLINGAME, CA — As "very unhealthy" air quality continues to blanket the region, most schools across San Mateo County were closed Friday for classes. And while some districts are closed all next week for the Thanksgiving holiday, others are scheduled to have classes part of the week. However, if the poor air quality continues, district officials may decide to cancel classes again.

"In response to air quality concerns and with guidance from the County Health Department and Office of Emergency Services, local school district leaders are monitoring conditions with the goal to keep children safe and schools open whenever possible," the SMC Office of Education said.

The Office of Education says each district will make its own decisions about remaining open or closed. To keep parents updated, the office launched a page on its website listing the status of closures.

"Please note that school leaders are making decisions based on guidance from the San Mateo County Health Department, the Environmental Protection Agency’s website AirNow.gov and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District’s website," the office said. "We would ask parents and community members to use these sources as well."
