Syracuse-area coalition offers free help for homeowners facing foreclosure

A coalition of seven Syracuse organizations has launched a regional foreclosure prevention program to help combat the mortgage crisis in Central New York.

Through the program, struggling homeowners can get free financial and legal counseling, in English and Spanish, from a network of qualified providers within 48 hours.

The state Banking Department and Division of Housing and Community Renewal are funding the program that will target Onondaga, Oswego, Cayuga, Cortland and Madison counties.Cooperative Federal Credit Union, Home Headquarters and the Northeast Hawley Development Association will provide housing and financial counseling, and arrange refinancing, debt consolidation and loan modifications.

Homeowners can get free legal advice from the Frank H. Hiscock Legal Aid Society, Legal Services of CNY and the Syracuse University College of Law.

Syracuse United Neighbors will lead grass-roots outreach efforts to steer at-risk homeowners to the program.

Home HeadQuarters is the largest nonprofit housing and community development organization in Central New York. Experts at Home Headquarters will gather information, then refer clients to foreclosure counselors who will work with homeowners to create foreclosure prevention action plans.
