Retired Spokane Firefighter Dies In Plane Crash

The ultralight plane was found crashed near a dam in Colfax.

SPOKANE, WA - A retired Spokane firefighter died Wednesday when his ultralight plane crashed along the Snake River near Colfax, according to the Whitman County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities believe Ronny Weston, 64, of Cheney was camping with his family at Boyer Park along the Snake River. He took off from an airstrip near the park around 6:30 a.m.

An employee at the Lower Granite Dam noticed the wreckage of Weston's plane near train tracks east of Boyer Park around 7:15 a.m.

Weston was flying a Solaris 16.8 ultralight plane and was an experienced pilot, according to the sheriff's office. Local authorities and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating what caused the crash.
