HENRY COUNTY, AL (WSFA) - The bridge on State Highway 173 is now open.

According to the Alabama Department of Transportation, the bridge had been closed for a year for updating repairs – which included widening.

The bridge connects Headland to Newville and while the area was closed, commuters were forced to detour on County Road 5.

County leaders say having the area re-opened is not just important for local drivers – it's also important for businesses.

"We depend on a lot of goods moving in and out on trucks and this will make it a little easier for them," said Henry County Commission Chair David Money.

According to ALDOT the $3.48 million project finished ahead of schedule. It was originally set to finish by the summer.
