An Independence man faces a murder charge in a fatal, multi-vehicle crash that occurred in Crestview Hills in March.

Scott Rains, 33, was indicted for murder, assault, criminal mischief and driving under the influence, by the Kenton County grand jury on Thursday, according to the Kenton County Commonwealth's Attorney's office.

Police previously said Rains was driving south on Turkeyfoot Road near Thomas More College on March 9 when he crossed the center line, struck a Chevrolet Cobalt and then slammed head-on into a Hyundai.

The crash killed Marianne Gerl, of Erlanger, and injured another driver. Rains also was injured, police previously said.

Authorities shut down Turkeyfoot Road near College Park Drive for more than three hours to investigate.

Rains is awaiting trial in a medical facility run by the Kentucky Department of Corrections, according to the Kenton County Commonwealth's Attorney office.

He faces 20 to 50 years or life in prison if convicted, the office said.
