MONTOUR FALLS--A new field operations building has been approved by the state and construction on the $5 million project at the Montour Falls Fire Academy property will start in October.
Kristin Devoe, director of public information for the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, said construction crews are expected to begin site and foundation work around the end of October and take 14-15 months to complete.
The new building is designed to be 20,000 square feet and will be constructed on the training grounds in proximity to the area used for firefighting skills training. It will be a single story building that will contain storage and protection for fire apparatus used for training, classrooms, locker rooms, lunch room, firefighter personal protective equipment decontamination equipment and breathing air supply/maintenance.
Devoe said the new facility will provide career and volunteer firefighters state-of-the-art classrooms, advanced equipment, and greater space to improve and maximize the delivery of training to New York's first responders.
Devoe added this project will also serve as another important asset in the Southern Tier, providing construction and economic development benefits to Schuyler County and the surrounding region.
