A gunman who was hit in an exchange of shots with police outside a west Little Rock fast food restaurant Sunday afternoon has died, authorities said.

Little Rock Police Chief Keith Humphrey said officers were called to investigate a report of a suspicious person in the area of the Shackleford Crossings shopping center near Shackleford Road and Interstate 430. Dispatch records show the first call came in about 2:45 p.m.

Humphrey said officers at some point made contact outside an Arby's at the complex, and shots were later fired.

"The subject fired at the officers and at some point our officers fired back, striking the suspect," Humphrey said. He later clarified that two officers were involved, though he didn't know if both or just one fired shots that hit the suspect.

The person who was shot was taken to a local hospital, where he was initially listed in critical condition. Police said later Sunday afternoon that the person had died.

Investigators did not release the person's name, but they described him as a white male.

No other injuries were reported.
