TOY DRIVE

The Tyler Fire Department has begun its annual toy drive in partnership with the Salvation Army "Toys For Tots". Toys can be dropped of at any of the following locations through Dec. 13 at any Tyler fire station, all Tyler Whataburgers and Prestige Estates Nursing Home. To locate your nearest fire station, go to Fire.CityOfTyler.org, scroll over the blue "about us" tab and select "find a fire station." When kids drop off the toys at their local fire station they can get a tour of a fire truck.

 

FILM

While attending The University of Texas at Tyler, Kenny Rigsby, of Lindale, and Justin Reese, of Canton, attended The University of Texas at Tyler and became fast friends over shared interests which included design, film and good coffee. Rigsby and Reese have written and directed their fourth short film, "No Matter How Far," which earned "Best Texas Film" in the 2013 Downtown Tyler Film Festival. They have submitted "No Matter How Far" to other festivals, including South by Southwest in Austin. The film was shot entirely in Tyler with UT Tyler Honors Program students serving as extras.

 

 

RE-ELECTED

Roger Claxton of Celeste, and George Hodges, of Grapeland, were recently re-elected to three year terms on the Board of Directors for Heritage Land Bank. Claxton is employed with the Tulsa Welding School and also serves as a director. He is a graduate of East Texas State University in Commerce where he earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science Degrees. Hodges is a full-time rancher in southern Anderson County. He has been a Heritage Land Bank Association member since 1999, serving on the board for the past six years. Mr. Hodges is part-owner of a family operated farm in Illinois. Mr. Hodges is a graduate of Illinois State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agribusiness.

 

TOP 100

Trinity Mother Frances Home Health, the home health care agency of Trinity Mother Frances Rehabilitation Hospital, has ranked as one of the top 100 home health care agencies in the United States on the HomeCare Elite listing for 2013. The list, created annually, recognizes the top 25 percent of free-standing and facility-based home care providers and designates those that are identified as the top 100 and 500 agencies in the nation based on performance measures. The performance measures include quality of care, quality improvement, patient experience, process measure implementation and financial management.

 

 

DIRECTOR

Ginger C. Haberle has been named Executive Director of Historic Tyler Inc. She has volunteered for more than 10 years with various nonprofit agencies in Tyler. She has been chairman of major community events and volunteered with Azleway Boys Ranch, Heart of Tyler-Main Street, Trinity Mother Frances Women's Board, Cystic Fibrosis, Komen Foundation, Therapet, and the Texas Rose Festival. Mrs. Haberle graduated from Louisiana State University with a BS in Elementary Education.

 

RESEARCH

The University of Texas at Tyler College of Nursing and Health Sciences invites men and women to participate in a research study for colorectal cancer survivors. Participants must be at least 18 years old, have been diagnosed with Stage I, II or III colorectal cancer within the past five years (since Jan. 2008), able to read and write English and willing to complete testing of memory/thinking and questionnaires. CONTEST

The UT Tyler Ninja Tyler Trojans placed in the top three among 11 collegiate teams and received a cash prize in the amount of $100. UT Tyler topped teams from eight other institutions, including UT Dallas, UT San Antonio, Iowa State University, NYU-Poly and Grenoble INP — Esisar, France. This is UT Tyler's first attempt to contend in the competition and qualify for the finals. The contest, held with other events as part of NYU-Poly's Cyber Security Awareness Week, challenged students' knowledge in one of the newest and most difficult fields within cyber security: testing and protecting electronic hardware.

 

 

OFFICER

Matt Carpenter has been welcomed by AgriLand Farm Credit as a loan officer in the cooperative's Tyler lending office. Carpenter attended Texas State University, where he obtained his bachelor's degree in finance. He has more than 18 years of experience in the banking industry.

 

 

APPOINTMENT

Derrith Bondurant has joined UT Health Northeast as its new associate vice president of Institutional Advancement and chief development officer. Ms. Bondurant comes to UT Health from The University of Texas at Tyler, where she was director of Alumni Relations. Ms. Bondurant has held a graduate assistantship in speech communication at the University of Southern Mississippi and has completed courses at the America's Hospital Association-Institute of Public Relations Management. She has a bachelor's in speech communication from the University of Southern Mississippi.

 

SHADOW DAY

East Texas Baptist University will hold Shadow Day on Dec. 5 and 6 for high school seniors and college transfer students. Shadow Day allows prospective students to spend the night in the dorm, socialize with current students, and visit with professors at breakfast and by attending classes.  High School seniors or college transfer students must pre-register. There is a $20 nonrefundable fee required although if a student submits their Application for Admission and Financial Aid during their visit the fee will be waived. FOOD DRIVE

Brookshire Grocery Co. stores throughout Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas have begun the 32nd Annual Spirit of Christmas Food Drive. Brookshire's and Super 1 Foods stores will collect donations of nonperishable food items and team up with a wide range of service organizations, food pantries, and other volunteer groups to distribute food to families who need assistance. BGC will donate boxes of nonperishable food items, as well as a coupon for a free roasting hen to accompany each box of food distributed. The food drive will last until December 18 in the Tyler area.
