Picture Vernon: When Trains Reigned

Check out the latest installment of the Picture Vernon series.

VERNON, CT — The latest installment of the picture Vernon series takes us back to the early 1900s, when train service ran through town.

The black-and-white image comes from the book, "Imges of America ... Vernon-Rockville In The Twentieth Century."

It shows Vernon Avenue before it was paved and the train line that took both freight and passengers between Vernon Depot and Rockville, the book tells us. What was then the New England Mill can be seen through the overpass.

The passenger service ran until 1930, according to the book. A remaining overpass from that era is on Tunnel Road and is part of a recreation trail system. It is shown in the color image.
