Kerry Washington exudes elegance in showstopping gown at the premiere of her new film American Son at TIFF

She's on the other side of quite a big 'Scandal' on TV, and on Thursday she commanded the sidewalk in Toronto outside the premiere of her new film.

Actress Kerry Washington, who stars opposite Jeremy Jordan in the upcoming drama American Son, looked radiant in a black crushed velvet sweetheart top and long metallic patterned skirt with bustle, both of which were from Zuhair Murad Couture.

The Bronx-born Washington, 42, wore her jet black hair in bangs and a tousled bob, and had a daringly dark shade of violet on her lips for the event at the Toronto International Film Festival.

It was all about Kerry's skirt for this look, which served up maximum wow-factor thanks to both its volume and shiny pattern.

Reminiscent of a quilt with old world touches, the metallic skirt in shades of magenta and pink had a high slit up the front and fanned out into a grandiose train behind. 

Her ruched top had knots on the shoulders and gave the look a sultry, sexy edge.

The Django Unchained star completed the look with hoops in her ears, some rings on her fingers and open-toed sandals.

American Son tells the story of an estranged Florida couple who reunite in search of their missing teenage son. 

Washington, who played Olivia Pope on the Shonda Rhimes series Scandal for eight years, is also credited as a producer on the new movie.

American Son was directed by Kenny Leon, who was also present at the Toronto premiere with Kerry.

Washington is also famous for her work on How To Get Away With Murder, as well as for playing Anita Hill in 2016's TV movie Confirmation. 

Earlier on Thursday, the actress attended a speaking panel at the festival, in a corset strapless top and pleated pants in much the same tones as her gown.

In addition to American Son, Kerry is currently filming the Lynn Shelton-directed limited series Little Fires Everywhere, which also stars Reese Witherspoon and Joshua Jackson.

She is also attached to star in the comedy 24/7, directed by Eva Longoria.
