San Bernardino County reported nine deaths from COVID-19 on Saturday, Oct. 17 — after reporting only five total COVID-19 deaths from Oct. 10 through Friday, Oct. 16.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, 998 San Bernardino County residents have died of COVID-19.
Here are the latest numbers, according to county and state public health officials.

Confirmed cases: 59,602 total, up 139 from Friday, averaging 253 reported per day in the past week
Deaths: 998 total, up nine from Friday, averaging 1.7 reported per day in the past week
Hospital survey: 189 confirmed and 44 suspected patients hospitalized Friday, including 46 confirmed and 4 suspected patients in the ICU, with 25 of 25 facilities reporting. The number of confirmed patients is down 9.6% from a week earlier.
People tested: 713,248 total, up 4,303 from Friday, averaging 4,919 reported per day in the past week
Resolved cases (estimate): 56,651 total, up 379 from Friday, averaging 268 per day in the past week
Reopening plan tier: Purple (widespread risk level, many non-essential indoor business operations are closed) based on these metrics as of Tuesday:

- Case rate adjusted for testing volume: 10.3
- Test positivity rate: 6.5% (8.7% in socioeconomically challenged neighborhoods)
- What’s next: San Bernardino County is not meeting the criteria to move to a less-restrictive tier. When it has met them for two consecutive weeks, it can advance. The state updates numbers and tiers on Tuesdays.
