Interim Opposition leader Nicole Sarauer said despite them being on opposite sides of the political spectrum, Phillips brought the best of Saskatchewan forward on a daily basis.

“In politics, we often find ourselves on opposite sides of an issue but Kevin embodied what we’re truly here to do; to best represent our constituents and ensure they have a voice in our legislature,” Sarauer said in a statement.

“We should all strive to live up to the spirit of collaboration and commitment to community that Kevin lived every day.”

Flags at the legislature have been lowered to half-mast to honour Phillips.

Phillips was first elected to the legislature in the 2011 general election and re-elected in 2016.

He was most recently the deputy whip for the Saskatchewan Party.

Phillips was the mayor of Melfort prior to his election as MLA. He was also a partner with the Melfort Journal, worked with the Kinsmen Club and served as a board member for the Melfort School Division.

Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
