A Spirit Airlines passenger jet takes off from McCarran International Airport Thursday, Jan. 28, 2021.

Several flights from Spirit Airlines to Las Vegas and across the nation have been canceled or delayed by a series of “weather and operational” challenges, the Florida-based airline said today.

As of 1 p.m., 12 of the 41 flights arriving at McCarran International Airport were delayed and another 10 are canceled. A total of 19 were scheduled to arrive on time.

By contrast, 27 of Spirit’s 40 departing flights were on time, seven were delayed and six had been canceled.

In an emailed statement, a Spirit spokesperson encouraged customers to monitor their emails and flight status before heading to the airport. Any customers seeking assistance are asked to chat with an agent.

“We’re working around the clock to get back on track in the wake of some travel disruptions over the weekend due to a series of weather and operational challenges,” Spirit spokesperson Field Sutton wrote in the statement. “We needed to make proactive cancellations to some flights across the network, but the majority of flights are still scheduled as planned.”

McCarran officials advised passengers flying today and Tuesday to check Spirit’s website for details before leaving home. They labeled it as a fluid situation.

Videos posted to social media showed the line at the Spirit ticket counter at McCarran to be dozens, if not hundreds, of people long. And one user on Twitter traveling on Spirit through Puerto Rico posted:

“When #spiritairlines leaves you stranded in Puerto Rico with no employees in sight and holds your luggage and money hostage,” @2touchTito posted.

The user continued, “We were stuck overnight with no clothes or essentials for our 3 or 1 year olds and are still without answers searching for flights.”
