The BBC has released the first trailer for upcoming drama Strike - The Cuckoo's Calling, adapted from the novel by Robert Galbraith (aka JK Rowling) – and it's just as atmospheric as we imagined.

Starring The Musketeers' Tom Burke as the titular private detective Cormoran Strike, a mentally-scarred ex-soldier who's turned detective, Strike already looks like it will be full of suspense with every episode.

The adaptation also features Holliday Grainger as Strike's partner-in-crime-fighting Robin Ellacott, with the detective and his new employee investigating the supposed suicide of model Lula Landry — a case that quickly spirals out of control into a deeper conspiracy and puts Strike's life at risk.

The show boasts an all-star cast, including Martin Shaw, Tara Fitzgerald, Siân Phillips and Elarica Johnson.

The BBC first declared back in 2014 that it planned to adapt the Strike series — The Cuckoo's Calling, The Silkworm and Career of Evil — as three "event dramas", and if this trailer is anything to go by, we can't wait until the rest are made.

[The Casual Vacancy]

Rowling's The Casual Vacancy was previously turned into a three-part BBC One drama starring Keeley Hawes, Sir Michael Gambon and Emilia Fox back in 2015.

Their latest collaboration, Strike: The Cuckoo's Calling, has been adapted for television by Outcasts scribe Ben Richards and The Crown's Tom Edge.

Strike - The Cuckoo's Calling begins Sunday, August 27 at 9pm on BBC One.
