Amateur baseball league playoffs begin Wednesday

The second season of amateur baseball is about to begin.

Everybody’s got a chance in the First Nite and Gopher league playoffs.

Why?

You know the answer: Every team starts 0-0.

Yes, but well, not exactly. The teams with the best records get the highest seeds and -- technically -- the easier first-round matchups.

The Windom Pirates concluded the regular season with a 13-4 First Nite League record and first place by virtue of a head-to-head sweep of Fairmont, which also finished 13-4. Jackson was 11-6, Lakefield 7-10, Heron Lake 3-14 and Worthington 0-17.

In the Gopher League, the Milroy Irish finished 17-1. Luverne was 15-3, Pipestone 12-6, Hadley 11-7, Adrian 4-14, Ruthton 4-14 and Tracy 4-14.

Milroy, Windom and Luverne receive byes to the Region 13 playoffs.

Best-of-three league playoff series begin Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Hadley plays Heron Lake at Luverne, Worthington is at Pipestone, Adrian at Lakefield, Ruthton at Jackson and Tracy at Fairmont.

Games are also scheduled for Friday at 7:30 p.m., as Pipestone is at Worthington, Lakefield at Adrian and Jackson at Ruthton. On Saturday at 2 p.m., Heron Lake is at Hadley and Fairmont is at Tracy.

Game threes (if necessary) are Sunday at 2 p.m. Heron Lake is at Hadley, Worthington at Pipestone, Adrian at Lakefield and Ruthton at Jackson.
