Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest 2015
Join us on February 11th to watch 10 Napa County high school students compete in the county poetry recitation competition.
Arts Council Napa Valley announces a countywide contest for Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest.
The competition, presented in partnership with the California Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Poetry Foundation, is part of a national program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance, and competition.
In the 2014‐2015 school year, Poetry Out Loud celebrates its tenth anniversary, reaching nearly 2.5 million students at more than 7,300 schools nationwide in the past decade.

On February 11th, 10 students from Napa County schools will participate in the Poetry Out Loud school contest at the new Lucky Penny Community Art Center. The winner of this competition will advance to the California State Poetry Out Loud contest.
The California champion will advance to the Poetry Out Loud National Finals on April 28‐29, 2015 in Washington, DC, where $50,000 in awards and school stipends will be distributed.

Schools that are participating include American Canyon High School, New Tech High School, St. Helena High School, Napa High School and Justin Siena High School.

About Poetry Out Loud
Poetry Out Loud is a national arts education program that encourages the study of great poetry by offering educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition to high schools across the country. Poetry Out Loud uses a pyramid structure. Participating teachers use the Poetry Out Loud toolkit to teach poetry recitation and run classroom competitions. Students select, memorize, and recite poems from an anthology of more than 800 classic and
contemporary poems. Beginning at the classroom level, winners will advance to the school‐wide competition, then to the state competition, and ultimately to the National Finals in Washington, DC. Some 365,000 students from more than 2,300 high schools took part in the 2013–2014 Poetry Out Loud program.
BACKGROUND ON POETRY OUT LOUD: NATIONAL RECITATION CONTEST
The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation have created Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest, an innovative arts education program, which is managed in partnership with the state arts agencies and their partners. Poetry Out Loud is a national arts education program that encourages the study of great poetry by offering educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition to high schools across the country. In the 2014‐2015 school year, Poetry Out Loud celebrates its tenth anniversary, reaching nearly 2.5 million students at more than 7,300 schools nationwide in the past decade.
Poetry Out Loud uses a pyramid structure. Beginning at the classroom level, winners advance to a school‐wide competition, then to the state competitions in February and March, and then to the National Finals in Washington, DC, on April 28‐29, 2015.
The state arts agencies in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands have enlisted high schools to participate in the official Poetry Out Loud program. The NEA and the Poetry Foundation provide program materials (Teacher’s Guide, online poetry anthology, a Learning Recitation DVD, CD, and posters) for distribution to participating schools. Materials are also available online at www.poetryoutloud.org.
Any school nationwide may visit www.poetryoutloud.org to access online program materials. Using these materials, they are welcome to conduct their own “unofficial” poetry recitation competitions to introduce their students to classic and contemporary poetry.
