Knights pull away from Warriors in 2nd half

Middletown 42, Boonsboro 21

MIDDLETOWN, Md. — The Warriors (2-2) played the Knights (3-1) evenly through one half before Middletown pulled away in the second half Friday night.

Boonsboro scored the game’s first touchdown five minutes into the first quarter, but Middletown quickly responded with a score to tie it. The Warriors regained the lead at 14-7 by the end of the period on a score by Isaiah Barnhart.

Jaylen Dotson scored to bring Middletown back into a tie in the second quarter. The Knights took a 21-14 lead later in the period, but Max Crist found the end zone before the half to bring Boonsboro back into a tie.

Middletown opened a lead with a pair of third-quarter touchdowns to make it 35-21, and added a score in the fourth.

Waynesboro 27, Big Spring 7

WAYNESBORO, Pa. — Jay Alvarez ran for a score and threw for another as the Indians (3-2) defeated Big Spring (2-3).

Big Spring scored the only touchdown of the first quarter for a 7-0 lead, capitalizing on one of Waynesboro’s two turnovers in the period.

The Indians tied it at 7 on Alvarez’s 35-yard TD pass to Johnny Hoffman late in the second quarter.

Quentin Gaskill ran 49 yards for a score and a 14-7 Indians lead in the third quarter. Waynesboro made it 21-7 on a 24-yard Alvarez run, which was set up by his 55-yard run and and an 18-yarder by Gaskill.

Adam Wertz returned a fumble 40 yards for a score and a 27-7 lead early in the fourth.

State College 35, Chambersburg 16

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Tommy Friberg threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, and the Little Lions (5-0) beat the Trojans (4-1) in a battle of unbeatens.

The Little Lions opened the scoring on their first offensive play, with Friberg carrying 53 yards to the end zone for a 7-0 lead.

State College then caught Chambersburg off guard with an onside kick, which the Little Lions recovered before Friberg threw a 9-yard scoring pass to Keaton Ellis to make it 14-0.

The Trojans’ next drive ended when Brady Stumbaugh was picked off by Nathan Lusk, who returned it 33 yards to the end zone to make it 21-0 just over four minutes in.

Stumbaugh got Chambersburg on the board with a 1-yard keeper midway through the first period to make it 21-7. The Trojans added a safety on a high State College punt snap through the end zone to make it 21-9.

Another Stumbaugh interception led to Dresyn Green’s 5-yard scoring run that gave State College a 28-9 lead early in the second quarter. Late in the half, the Little Lions capped an 80-yard drive with a 3-yard pass from Friberg to Ellis to make it 35-9.

Tucker Perry forced a fumble, picked it up and returned it to the end zone to get Chambersburg within 35-16 in the third quarter.

Martinsburg 42, Academy Park (Pa.) 20

SHARON HILL, Pa. — The Bulldogs, who are two-time defending West Virginia Class AAA champions, ran their winning streak to 33 games, forcing five turnovers.

Grant Harman’s 34-yard TD pass to Chelo Teneval gave Martinsburg 14-6 lead early second quarter. The Bulldogs made it 21-6 when R.J. Barrett blocked a punt and Trey Sine recovered it and ran 15 yards to the end zone. Martinsburg led 28-13 at the half.

Dewayne Grantham scored twice in the second half to give the Bulldogs a 42-20 lead midway through the fourth quarter.

Musselman 61, Princeton 28

INWOOD, W.Va. — Blake Hartman finished with five touchdowns and the Applemen (4-0) rolled past Princeton.

Hartman gave Musselman a 6-0 lead with the game’s first touchdown. Princeton came back to take an 8-6 lead, before Hartman found the end zone again to give the Applemen a 12-8 advantage.

Tre Beard found Keegan Teets on a TD pass and Sebastian Oldhalm ran in the conversion to push Musselman’s advantage to 20-7.

Hartman added a third scoring run and a touchdown grab of a long Beard bomb, before Beard hit Keegan with another scoring pass to put the Applemen ahead 42-7 on the way to a 42-14 halftime lead.

It was 48-21 after three quarters, and Hartman’s fifth score made it 55-21.

Hedgesville 45, James Wood (Va.) 20

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. — The Eagles (4-1) got three scores from Owie Ash and two from Malakai Brown in a victory.

Hedgesville got touchdown runs from Ash and Niyjere Smith to open a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Brown scored twice in the second period as Hedgesville took a 28-14 lead into the half.

Ash scored late in the third quarter to extend the Eagles’ lead to 35-14, and his third score of the game made it 42-20 in the fourth. The Eagles added a field goal late.

Keyser 31, Jefferson 24

ROMNEY, W.Va. — The Golden Tornado rallied from a 24-7 deficit in the second half to stun the Cougars (0-5).

Jefferson struck first on Corbin Pierson’s quarterback keeper for a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

Keyser answered on a fourth-and-9 scoring pass of 20 yards from Ryan Shoemaker to Reggie Redman to tie the game late in the opening period.

Jacob Wallace boomed a 44-yard field goal to give the Cougars a 10-7 lead early in the second quarter. Pierson then found John Gidney for a 70-yard TD pass and a 17-7 lead with 15 seconds left in the half.

Pierson threw a 20-yard TD pass early in the third quarter for a 24-7 lead.

Keyser found the end zone on Brady Clay’s 2-yard run to make it 24-13, and Evan Moreland scored later in the third period to cut it to 24-19.

Aaron Lyons ran in a go-ahead score midway through the fourth quarter to give the Golden Tornado a 25-24 lead. Keyser extended the lead to 31-24 on Drae Allen’s 16-yard run, then put the game away with a defensive stand late.

St. John’s Catholic 62, Hancock 8

HANCOCK — The Panthers (0-3) lost to St. John’s Catholic Prep.

Clarke County (Va.) 45, Washington 8

BERRYVILLE, Va. — Clarke County scored the first 24 points and put away the Patriots (0-5).

Clarke County opened the scoring on Kyle Baylor’s 9-yard run midway through the opening stanza. Peyton Rutherford added a 5-yard TD run late in the period to make it 14-0, and a 33-yard field goal late in the second quarter made it 17-0 at halftime.

Trey Trenary hit Colby Childs with a 38-yard TD pass to make it 24-0 late in the third quarter, before the Patriots got on the board on a 13-yard pass.

Baylor ran back an interception 36 yards to make it 38-8 in the fourth. Rutherford scored on a 35-yard run to make it 45-8.

North Hagerstown 3, St. Maria Goretti 0

Drew Wallech had 13 kills and two blocks for undefeated North Hagerstown in a 25-17, 25-19, 25-21 sweep of St. Maria Goretti on Friday.

Chloe Coulter had seven kills and 10 digs, Riley Palmer had 11 digs and Claire Knepper had 26 assists for the visiting Hubs (6-0).

For the Gaels, Peyton Kirchner had eight kills, four digs, two blocks and two aces, Abigail Michael had six kills and 10 digs, Zoie King had 14 assists, three kills, four digs and three aces, Jaya Smith had nine digs and Kyriah Stubbs had eight digs and four kills.

Grace Academy 3, New Life 0

FREDERICK, Md. — Katie Morgan had 19 kills, seven digs and two blocks to lead Grace Academy in a 25-10, 25-14, 25-19 MDCC sweep of New Life Christian on Friday.

Taylor Smith had 34 assists, Zoe Pifer had six kills, 17 digs and five aces and Kat Storch had seven digs and four aces for the Knights (5-5, 4-4).

Tuscarora 3, South Hagerstown 2

FREDERICK, Md. — Sadie Leisinger had 22 kills and four blocks for South Hagerstown in a 24-26, 16-25, 25-15, 25-23, 15-8 loss to Tuscarora on Friday.

Maddy Baker had 24 assists, Cheyenne Price had 16 assists and three blocks and Makehna Charlton had 17 digs for the Rebels (2-3).

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — Tahra Kennedy had nine kills and Mackenzie Householder had 20 assists and seven aces for Cumberland Valley Christian School in a 25-18, 25-18, 25-14 sweep of Faith Christian on Friday.

Hunter Timmons had seven kills and Ryleigh Timmons had 11 digs and three aces the Blazers.

THURMONT, Md. — Maggie Elwood scored two goals to lead Clear Spring past Catoctin on Friday.

Leah Howard and Grace Weber each had a goal, Keely Knotts had two assists, Celia Ramacciotti had an assist and Leah Hoskins and Gloria Clark combined for seven saves in the shutout for the Blazers (2-2-2).

MERCERSBURG, Pa. — The Rockets scored the game’s lone goal on penalty kick in the second half Thursday night.

Each team had 11 shots on goal. Hannah Beeler made six saves for the Blue Devils.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — Kenneth Hott scored six goals for a double hat trick as Cumberland Valley Christian School improved to 10-1, overwhelming Faith Christian on Friday.
