Family and friends of the man shot and killed by Albuquerque police on Sunday have come forward to identify him. Family friend Donald Layton said 18-year-old Anthony David Chavez was the man shot and killed by APD and that they are still waiting to learn why.
"I never thought something like this would happen," Layton said.
It happened at an apartment complex on Louisiana Boulevard and Gibson Southeast.
"I was caught totally off-guard with the whole thing," Layton said.
Layton lives with Chavez's uncle and said he saw Chavez the night before the incident.
"He did seem fine when he was visiting with us," Layton said.
APD has not confirmed that Chavez was the man shot by police. They have also not released any new updates since the shooting happened Sunday. APD officers were called to the area for reports of shots fired in the complex. When they got there, they got into what they said was a "confrontation" with an armed man. They said at least one officer fired at the suspect. The man died on the scene.
"Just sad, sad, terrible tragedy that they could have tried better methods of trying to coax a young man down, instead of shooting him and leaving him in the middle of the street and putting him in a body bag," Layton said.
The family said they have set up a GoFundMe to pay for funeral costs.
