Renovations begin soon for Fort Payne Police Department

FORT PAYNE, AL (WAFF) - The sounds of home improvement will soon be ringing in Fort Payne.

That’s because the police department is getting a much-needed face-lift.

The city is about to embark on several capital projects but the first one to be done is the police department.

Built in the 1940s the old city hall which is now the police department is about to get an overhaul.

The city council approved a bid Tuesday of a little more than $800,000 to refresh the old building.

Fort Payne Mayor Larry Chesser says much of the work will be outside which includes replacing a portion of the roof, leaking windows, as well as some work inside which includes new electrical and plumbing.

While renovating, Chesser says they’ll also be upgrading.

They will put in energy efficient LED lighting and upgrade the alternate power source.

“The generator is just big enough to handle 911 now which is located in that building. We’re going to have to have a generator that’s big enough to handle the whole building that keeps our computers going. If they go out we’re in trouble,” said Chesser.

Contractors are expected to begin their work in the next few weeks.
