Cubs' Montgomery sidelined

Tribune Wire Reports
South Bend Tribune

The discomfort in Mike Montgomery’s left shoulder during Thursday’s bullpen session was severe enough for the Chicago Cubs to place him on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to Aug. 14.

Tyler Chatwood will start Saturday against the Pirates in place of Montgomery.

“I felt something after my bullpen outing and honestly thought it was normal soreness,” Montgomery said Friday afternoon. “It’s frustrating, but I have to get it right. I don’t think it’s too far off. Just a little discomfort there.”

Montgomery had a 3.08 ERA in 13 starts filling in for injured righty Yu Darvish. But the Cubs have been monitoring his usage, considering he threw a career-high 130 innings last season. He’s at 99 this year. Ironically, Montgomery felt discomfort during a time when the Cubs were backing off of him. He was skipped in the rotation last time around.

Chatwood returns to the starting staff after being sent to the bullpen in favor of Cole Hamels, who was acquired in a July trade. Despite missing starts, he still leads the majors in walks with 90.

Chatwood threw 5.2 innings in relief, giving up four runs.

Left-handed reliever Randy Rosario was promoted from Triple-A Iowa.

Lengthy rest for Bauer

Cleveland Indians pitcher Trevor Bauer, one of the leading candidates for the AL Cy Young Award, will be out four to six weeks because of a stress fracture in his right leg.

Bauer, who believes he’ll return earlier than the team’s timetable, was hit by Jose Abreu’s liner Saturday against the Chicago White Sox. He experienced soreness and swelling, and an MRI on Tuesday revealed the injury.

Cleveland holds a 12-game lead over Minnesota in the AL Central entering Friday and will have to clinch the division without Bauer. The right-hander is 12-6 with a 2.22 ERA in 25 starts and is among the league leaders in ERA, innings pitched and strikeouts.

Votto has leg injury

The Cincinnati Reds placed first baseman Joey Votto on the 10-day disabled list Friday with a right lower leg injury.

The All-Star was hit by a pitch from Ryan Madson in Washington on Aug. 4. In Cincinnati’s 10 games since then, he missed four starts and two full games.

Gold Glove catcher Tucker Barnhart was in the Reds’ lineup for his first career start at first base for their game against San Francisco.

Outfielder Aristides Aquino was recalled from Double-A Pensacola to fill Votto’s roster spot.

Clemens promoted

Kody Clemens ended up with a short stay with the West Michigan Whitecaps as the second baseman — and son of pitcher great Roger Clemens — was promoted Friday to advanced Class-A Lakeland.

Clemens, the Tigers’ third-round pick in June out of the University of Texas, hit .302 with four home runs and 17 RBIs in 41 games with the Whitecaps. He was on a nine-game hitting streak and was 8 for 19 the past five games.

Clemens was joined in the move up by outfielder Brock Deatherage, a 10th-round pick in June out of North Carolina State. He hit .313 with 15 stolen bases in 46 games this season.

With the promotions, the Whitecaps add infielder Wenceel Perez and outfielder Reece Hampton from Connecticut,

The Whitecaps conclude a three-game home series 7:05 p.m. tonight against Lansing.

Chicago Cubs pitcher Mike Montgomery has been placed on the disabled list.
