Montgomery County Police are investigating a fatal accident in Spencerville involving a car and a motorcycle that happened around 3 p.m. Sunday.

Sunday night police released the name of the motorcyclist who died. He was identified as 42-year old Joe Odeh Dababneh of Silver Spring.

The crash happened near 1400 Spencerville Road, which is Rt. 198. Police shut down Rt. 198 between New Hampshire Avenue and Good Hope Road for about four hours as they investigated.

Police say witnesses told them the female driver of the car was attempting to make a left turn into a driveway. Police say their preliminary investigation indicates the male motorcyclist crossed the double yellow line to try to pass the car as it began turning left. The motorcycle then hit the car.

A witness tells ABC7 she saw medics use CPR to try to revive the rider of the motorcycle, but it didn't look like they had any success. The man was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The woman driving the car was also taken to a local hospital. Police describe her injuries as minor and not life-threatening.

Police said a big part of their investigation would be to determine if speed played a role in the accident.

Although it goes through a somewhat rural area and is only one lane in each direction, Rt. 198 in Spencerville is a busy road that many people use as an alternative to paying tolls on the nearby Intercounty Connector.
