Devastated sister pays tribute to ‘best wee brother’ Ross Cook after teen Queen of the South footballer tragically died after being ‘hit by train’ in Dumfriesshire

THE heartbroken sister of tragic Queen of the South footballer Ross Cook has paid tribute to the 'best wee brother'.

Ashley Cook, of Sanquar, Dumfriesshire, said 'nothing will be the same' after Ross, 19, died on Sunday.

The talented teen, a former academy and youth player, is thought to have been hit by a train in Dumfriessshire at Kirkconnel station on the Nith Valley line.

Ashley posted a series of snaps of her with her sibling on Facebook, writing: "Can’t believe I’m writing this, absolutely devastated that I have lost the best wee brother and a special friend.

"We are heartbroken and nothing will be the same again without Ross, he was one in a million.

"My mum, dad and I would like to thank everyone who have sent messages, cards and flowers and came in to see us at such a hard time, it means the world to have such a supportive family and amazing friends around us."

Ross found after a report of a body being found on the railway line on Sunday morning.

A spokesman for the BTP said that the 19-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene but there were no suspicious circumstances and his family had been informed.

Ross lived in Sanquhar with his family and had also played for South of Scotland side Nithsdale Wanderers where his father Stephen is secretary of the club.

A Queen of the South spokesman said Ross was part of their Club Academy programme from 2010 to 2015.

He said: "During his time in the youth setup he was a team-mate of a number of current first team squad members.

"Our thoughts at this sad time are with his family and friends."

The South of Scotland League issued a statement which said they were saddened to learn of the tragic death of Ross Cook, a player with Nithsdale Wanderers.

"Ross played for Queen of the South as well as representing Nithsdale Wanderers in the SSFL."

It adds: "Nithsdale Wanderers league match against Heston Rovers on Saturday has been postponed as a mark of respect.

"In tribute to Ross we would encourage SSFL clubs to observe either a minute's silence or a minute's round of applause before matches this weekend."

Tributes have also been paid on Nithsdale Wanderers FC Fanpage.

One said: "Rest easy Ross, Love the Nithsdale Boys."

Another from Lochmaben FC added: "It is so sad to hear this terrible news , our thoughts are with his family and friends."

Mark Mccreadie wrote: "Absolutely tragic news."
