Cole Sprouse Said His Twin Could Take Jughead's Place on "Riverdale"

Back in the ‘80s and ‘90s, sitcoms that featured twins always seemed to have a “twin swap” episode where one twin would pretend to be the other and no one would be the wiser. Cole and Dylan Sprouse actually starred in a sitcom all about being twins, The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, became super-famous child stars, and then took a break from acting to focus on college. However, in a new profile interview with Variety, Cole discussed his career since returning to TV with Riverdale and said he’s open to working with his brother again, and even dropped a hint that Dylan could replace him on the show. Just don’t expect them to star in The Suite Life Returns.

In the profile, part of Variety’s “Power of Young Hollywood” series, Cole talks about how the brothers rose to fame, first booking a diaper commercial and then working on TV shows like Grace Under Fire and Friends. Their big break, of course, was Big Daddy, the 1999 movie with Adam Sandler which taught both twins to “swear like sailors,” according to Cole. After spending six years with Disney doing Zack & Cody, both Cole and Dylan decided to attend college instead of continuing to work, but it wasn’t exactly smooth sailing at NYU.

“The amount of rumors that were spread about Dylan and I were incredible,” Cole told Variety. “When you’re a public figure, people use you to build their identities. And I think that was a bit daunting. But also because I’d been homeschooled, I had no idea what it was like to interact with other people socially.”

As we all know, both Cole and Dylan eventually did leave school and return to acting, with Cole landing the role of Jughead on Riverdale and Dylan picking up roles in indie films and a Camila Cabello music video.

So would the brothers join forces and work together again? It’s a firm maybe from Cole. “We’ve talked about it,” he said. But don’t expect them to go back to their Disney days. “The whole kitschy twin thing, I don’t think that really sells anymore. It’s about feeling passionate for acting again. If it’s a cool project, I don’t have a problem with that.”

While we’ve been told Dylan probably won’t ever appear on Riverdale, you can never truly be sure. When asked about Jughead’s future in season four, Cole told Variety that anything is possible in that sleepy little town. “To be honest, I think there could be a Riverdale without every single one of our characters. And then we’ll appear as ghosts, or our twins will take our place.”

Hmm, how interesting! We’ll be keeping a very close watch on Jughead in season four, just to make sure there’s no twin switcheroo happening before our eyes.
