Chattahoochee Tech Launches Carpentry Program

From Chattahoochee Tech: Chattahoochee Technical College is offering a new Carpentry diploma program and a Certified Construction Worker certificate program beginning this fall at the college’s Appalachian Campus in Jasper.

“We see a big need in the community for this program,” said Diane Geis, Chattahoochee Tech Associate Dean of Technical Studies. “They’re having a hard time in the construction industry finding workers with these skills. Students in this program can learn the foundation of carpentry and develop the skills necessary for successful employment as an entry-level carpenter or skilled construction worker.” Serving as Lead Instructor for this new program is Bill Mullis, of Pickens County. A U.S. Navy Veteran who is originally from Jesup, Georgia, Mullis has years of experience in residential construction. “Bill was a builder for most of his professional career prior to starting with Chattahoochee Tech,” said Jason Tanner, Chattahoochee Technical College Vice President of Academic Affairs and Economic Development. “He’s a great example of someone who was in the business of employing those learning the things he will now teach.” The college’s new Carpentry diploma program offers a sequence of 14 courses that will prepare students for careers in many different kinds of construction, noted Tanner.

Occupational courses include floor, wall and stair framing; ceiling and roof framing; exterior finishes and roof coverings; and interior finishes. Students also will learn about site development and complete a specialization in residential or commercial construction.

The Certified Construction Worker certificate program offers training through a series of three courses that will give students the knowledge and skills they need to work effectively on a construction site. Topics of study include professional tool use and safety, construction print reading fundamentals, and an overview of building construction practices and materials. “The mission at Chattahoochee Tech is to strengthen both individuals and businesses through workforce training,” said Dr. Ron Newcomb, President of Chattahoochee Technical College.“The college’s new Carpentry program at the Appalachian Campus helps fulfill that mission on behalf of our students and local industry.” For more information, visit www.ChattahoocheeTech.edu.
