Washington Redskins Outside Linebacker Prospects in the 2018 NFL Draft

Marvin Gentry-USA TODAY Sports

The Redskins have two top starters at outside linebacker but could use another developmental piece. They are not likely to spend a high pick on the position but with Preston Smith’s contract up at the end of the 2018 season, more depth could be added.

1. Bradley Chubb, North Carolina State

6’4", 269lbs, 34" arms, 9.88" hands, 4.65 40yd, 1.63 10yd, Talent level-top 10 pick, draft prediction-top 10 pick

Chubb is far and away the top front seven prospect in this draft. He is a virtual lock to go in the top 10 & I think he will probably go in the top five as pass rushers are always a hot commodity. Chubb is a better fit at defensive end but that won’t stop any 3-4 team from taking him if he is there when they pick and he is the best player available.

2. Marcus Davenport, Texas San Antonio

6’6", 264lbs, 34" arms, 9.13" hands, 4.58 40yd, 1.66 10yd, Talent-1st round, draft-1st round

Davenport is also a better fit at defensive end but he should do fine at OLB if a 3-4 team takes him. The competition UTSA faced wasn’t as strong as most other prospects faced but Davenport proved he could play with them at the Senior Bowl. I don’t have Davenport in my overall top 10 but I think there is a good chance that Davenport is picked before the Redskins spot at 13th in the draft.

3. Harold Landry, Boston College

6’2", 252lbs, 32.88" arms, 9.38" hands, 4.64 40yd, 1.59 10yd, Talent-2nd, Draft-1st-2nd

Landry played through injuries in 2017 and didn’t put up the great stats that he did in 2016. I evaluated Landry mostly off of his better year though and that easily puts him at #3 on this list. He is a good fit for a 3-4 defense and if drafted by the Redskins, he would be their speed rusher. I don’t think Landry will be drafted by the Redskins as the 13th spot is a little high for him and he will probably be gone when they pick in the second round.

4. Sam Hubbard, Ohio State

6’5", 270lbs, 33.13" arms, 10" hands, 4.78 40yd, Talent-2nd, Draft-2nd

Hubbard is a solid player but doesn’t have overall great athleticism. He will probably go somewhere in the second round to play DE for a 4-3 team, which is his best fit. For the Redskins, I would take Hubbard if he slipped a little but not with the 44th pick in the draft, where they currently are in the second round.

5. Lorenzo Carter, Georgia

6’5", 250lbs, 34" arms, 10.38" hands, 4.50 40yd, Talent-2nd, Draft-2nd

Carter is probably the best of the physical freaks available at OLB in the 2018 NFL Draft. I think he is a great fit in a 4-3 where he can use his great physical gifts. Pass rushing isn’t his only skill. If he slides to the 3rd round, I would take him for the Redskins but they don’t have a third round pick currently.

6. Arden Key, Louisiana State

6’5", 238lbs, 33.50" arms, 10" hands, 4.60? 40yd,, Talent-2nd, Draft-1st-2nd

Key had a tremendous season in 2016. Then he had some personal issues and left the team for awhile. When he came back he had gained a lot of weight. He wasn’t the same player. Key has gotten back to his former weight as he gets ready for the draft. Key was a dynamic pass rusher in 2016 and if he is that player again, he could be worth a 1st round pick. If not, he could be a bust.

7. Uchenna Nwosu, Southern California

6’2", 251lbs, 33.50" arms, 9.25" hands, 4.65 40yd, Talent-3rd, Draft-3rd

Nwosu came on big for the Trojans in 2017. With injuries on the edge of the defense, he stepped up and became a star. Nwosu fits best in a 4-3 defense but he has talent enough to adapt to the 3-4. If he drops to the 4th round, the Redskins should consider him.

8. Duke Ejiofor, Wake Forest

6’4", 264lbs, 34.88" arms, 9.75" hands, 4.73? 40yd, Talent-3rd, Draft-3rd-4th

Ejiofor has long arms which help tremendously rushing the passer. He had a very good season for Wake Forest in 2017. He could develop into a star.

9. Hercules Mata'afa, Washington State

6’2" 252lbs, 31.50" arms, 10.25" hands, 4.76 40yd, 1.65" 10yd, Talent-3rd, Draft-3rd-4th

Hercules has a great name & his play matched it for the Cougars. Mata’afa was an interior defensive lineman at WSU but his stature dictates a move outside and I think he has the mental makeup to excel there also. His 10 yard split is very good so he will probably develop a great first step.

10. Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, Oklahoma

6’1", 243lbs, 34.50" arms, 9.25" hands, 4.77 40yd, Talent-4th, Draft-4th-5th

Okoronkwo is relentless vs both the run and the pass. He is also undersized for the NFL.

11. Tyquan Lewis, Ohio State

6’2", 276lbs, 33.63" arms, 10.38" hands, 4.74? 40yd, Talent-4th, Draft-3rd-5th

Lewis may not fit at OLB. If he could gain 10-20 pounds, he would be much better as a 3-4 defensive end. The 4-3 May be a better fit overall for him.

12. Ade Aruna, Tulane

6’5", 262lbs, 34" arms, 10.63" hands, 4.60 40yd, 1.60 10yd, Talent-4th, Draft-3rd-5th

Aruna is another size/speed phenom. He has looked like a man amongst boys at times but not at all consistently. He may need a few years to develop. I could see a team taking him as early as the 3rd round due to his physical skills. A 1.60 10yd split is extremely good for a 262lb man.

13. Dorance Armstrong, Kansas

6’4", 257lbs, 34.75" arms, 10" hands, 4.87 40yd, 1.70 10yd, Talent-5th-6th, Draft-4th-6th

Armstrong underperformed in 2017. This grade is based more on his 2016 performance.

14. Jeff Holland, Auburn

6’2", 249lbs, 34.13" arms, 10" hands, 4.76? 40yd, Talent-5th-6th, Draft-5th-6th

Holland is slightly undersized but could be a surprise.

15. Marquis Haynes, Mississippi

6’2", 235lbs, 33" arms, 9.88" hands, 4.67 40yd, 1.67 10yd, Talent-5th-6th, Draft-5th-6th

Haynes needs to add bulk & muscle.

16. Chad Thomas, Miami

6’5", 281lbs, 34" arms, 10.38" hands, 4.92 40yd, 1.70 10yd, Talent-5th-6th, Draft-5th-6th

Thomas would probably be better at DE, even in the 3-4. He is very slow for an OLB but has good size for a move inside to Defensive End.

17. Shaquem Griffin, Central Florida

6’0", 227lbs, 32.13" arms, 9" Hand, 4.38 40yd, Talent-5th-6th(edge), draft-3rd-6th

Griffin was the star of the combine. He doesn’t fit well at 3-4 OLB but he is amazingly fast off the edge with his 4.38 speed. I expect a 4-3 team to draft him & give him a shot as a weak side LB but if he drops to the 4th, the Redskins should consider him at ILB.

18. Trevon Young, Louisville

6’4", 258lbs, 33.75" arms, 10" hands, 4.78 40yd, 1.62 10yd, Talent-6th-7th, Draft-6th-7th

Young was a very good pass rusher for Louisville.

19. Josh Sweat, Florida State

6’5", 251lbs, 34.64" arms, 10.25" hands, 4.53 40yd, 1.58 10yd, Talent-6th-7th, Draft-4th-6th

Sweat has amazing speed off the edge. If he learns to use it well, he could be a late round steal for some team.

20. Ja’Von Rolland-Jones, Arkansas State

6’2", 253lbs, 32.75" arms, 9.25" hands, 4.88 40yd, 1.72 10yd, Talent-6th-7th, Draft-6th-7th

Rolland-Jones played well versus lesser competition at Arkansas State.

21. Kylie Fitts, Utah

6’4", 263lbs, 32.38" arms, 9.38" hands, 4.69 40yd, 1.61 10yd, Talent-6th-7th, Draft-6th-7th

I wasn’t very high on Fitts but his speed at the combine made me look at him again. He could be a nice developmental fit at OLB.

22. Joe Ostman, Central Michigan

6’3", 255lbs, 31.25" arms, 10.13" hands, 4.80? 40yd, Talent-6th-7th, Draft-6th-7th

Ostman was a remarkable rusher at CMU. He doesn’t have great physical skills and didn’t play vs many top teams. He could stick with a team and develop.

23. Davin Bellamy, Georgia

6’5", 240lbs, 33.25" arms, 9.50" hands, 4.78? 40yd,

Bellamy needs to gain some muscle. He performed well vs top competition.

24. Aikeem Coleman, Idaho

6’3", 275lbs, 31.13" arms, 9.5" hands, 4.84? 40yd

Coleman is a tweener who may benefit more at 4-3 or 3-4 defensive end.

25. Marcus Martin, Slippery Rock

6’2", 255lbs, 31.25" arms, 9.25" hands, 4.70? 40yd

Martin was an amazingly player at Slippery Rock. I just don’t know where Slippery Rock is?

26. Jarrett Johnson, Texas A & M

6’3", 265lbs, 4.83? 40yd

Johnson played well replacing Myles Garrett. I’m not sure about his speed as an edge rusher.

27. Jacob Pugh, Florida State

6’4", 247lbs, 34.38" arms, 10.13" hands, 4.65 40yd

Pugh has long arms and good enough speed to develop in the NFL.

28. Sharif Finch, Temple

6’5", 250lbs, 4.65? 40yd

Finch performed well vs slightly lesser competition at Temple.

29. Leon Jacobs, Wisconsin

6’1", 246lbs, 33.50" arms, 9.50" hands, 4.48 40yd

Jacobs is smaller than the average edge rusher but faster than all of them in this draft.

30. Kemoko Turay, Rutgers

6’4", 252lbs, 33.63" arms, 9.38" hands, 4.65 40yd

Turay has good size and speed

31. Olasunkanmi Adeniyi, Toledo

6’1", 248lbs, 31.75" arms, 9.63" hands, 4.83 40yd, 1.68 10yd

Adeniyi is a good player who is undersized and not real fast.
