In the age of social media, pregnancy announcements have become elaborate, over-the-top affairs often requiring a full production crew and plenty of balloons. But even without all the Pinterest-worthy fanfare, Mindy Kaling’s announcement managed to take the cake.
On Friday, the actress opened up to Ellen DeGeneres about how her Wrinkle In Time co-star — the one-and-only Oprah Winfrey — spilled the beans about her pregnancy to the press, unaware that the actress had not yet made the news public. “She was very excited,” Kaling said, adding that she had also disclosed the news to co-star Reese Witherspoon during filming.
“At first it was like, okay, if anyone is going to announce big news about your private life, Oprah Winfrey is that person,” she laughed. “You also can’t be like, ‘Hey Oprah, zip it,’ because she’s almost like a religious figure.”
As the sixth and final season of The Mindy Project draws to a close this November, Kaling also opened up about how the show has come full circle, coinciding with the major touchstones of her personal life.
“I found out that the show got greenlit on the same day that my mother passed away,” said Kaling. Like her character on the show, Kaling’s mother was also an OB-GYN. “Now the show’s ending when I found out that I’m pregnant with my own daughter.”
“It felt like the show really helped me and trained me to kind of grow up and become a mom,” she added. “It’s really meaningful to me.”
DeGeneres closed the segment by helping Kaling fulfill one of her pregnancy cravings: Jelly donuts. “In L.A. you try to get a donut and they’re like, full of matcha or bacon or something,” she said as the jelly donuts were brought out on massive tray. “This is amazing!”
