Legendary New York hip-hop pioneers The Last Poets will be making an appearance at Pure Vinyl in Brixton on Tuesday 22nd May, 2018.
They’ll be visiting the record store in Ferndale Road, Brixton between 6pm and 7pm for “conversation, signing of their new album and maybe even a short performance.”
The group inspired many hip hop artists with their powerful spoken word over hypnotic beats, and their first album (The Last Poets) is considered by many to be the first hip hop album, and their album This Is Madness rightly considered a masterpiece of social commentary.
Critic Jason Ankeny wrote:
With their politically charged raps, taut rhythms, and dedication to raising African-American consciousness, the Last Poets almost single-handedly laid the groundwork for the emergence of hip-hop
Their new album (Understanding What Black Is) continues to bring their politically charged ‘jazzoetry’ and also pays homage to Prince (a big fan) and Biggie Smalls along the way.
