New Time magazine team heavy on digital, photo talent

A month after ascending to the top of Time magazine and its digital properties, Ed Felsenthal revealed his new inner circle and it was heavy on digital and photo talent.

One big surprise was the promotion of Emmy-winning director of photography Kira Pollack (“A Year in Space”) to be a new deputy editor, one of two top lieutenants to the editor-in-chief.

Eben Shapiro, who was already a deputy editor, keeps the job but appears to be getting sidelined into a job involving budgets, staffing and standards.

Three recently named executive editors got expanded duties: Sam Jacobs, executive editor and digital director; Siobhan O’Connor, in charge of the day-to-day oversight of the magazine; and Matt Vella, in charge of big-picture enterprise projects.

Also, Kelly Connifff was named editor of Time.com.

The moves come as sources say Time Inc. is bracing for a new round of cuts totaling 200, with about 100 expected from across the company’s editorial operations. A corporate spokeswoman offered no comment on that.

“We have a lot of exciting work ahead, and I can’t imagine a better team to tackle it,” said Felsenthal in a memo to staffers Monday.
