Being part of the Dynamo’s return to prominence last year is a big reason why Joe Willis wanted to come back in 2018.

The goalkeeper signed a new contract this week and reported for his first day of preseason training on Wednesday.

Willis’ previous contract expired following the 2017 season. Because he did not qualify for MLS free agency, the Dynamo were the only team with which he could negotiate.

“Last year we started something pretty special with this group,” Willis said. “I’m really happy to continue it and to contribute to the success of this club…

“If you look at successful teams in this league, a big part of it is keeping core players year after year. That’s something the staff has done. It makes transition a lot easier when you come into the preseason and people are familiar with each other.”

The Dynamo acquired Willis, 29, in a trade with D.C. United in 2014. He has appeared in 37 regular season games for the Dynamo the last three seasons, including eight last year.

He also played the final three playoff games last year following Tyler Deric’s suspension.

Without being able to train with the Dynamo until this week, Willis has been working out on his own and with Houston Baptist goalkeeper coach Chris Dodd.

Now with the Dynamo again, Willis immediately joins the competition for the starting job with fellow veteran Chris Seitz. Willis said he is looking forward to the challenge.

“These days it’s hard to cement a starting position,” Willis said. “No matter who you are in this league you’re always battling for a starting spot. It’s no different here.”
