SHAWNEE — Washington softball coach Jace Brewer was not pleased, even after his team's offense shined.

The Warriors outslugged Kingston in a 12-6 victory to open the Class 3A state tournament Thursday evening at The Ball Fields at Firelake, but it wasn't the prettiest of games.

Washington had 16 hits, but committed four errors and allowed 14 Kingston hits.

“We survived and we advanced,” Brewer said. “I told them it would be an offensive game. We made them pay and they made us pay. But it's a win and an advancement to tomorrow.”

Washington plays in the state semifinals at 11 a.m. against the winner of Verdigris and Holdenville.

The Warriors opened Thursday with three quick runs in the first inning and two in the second inning. It was 5-1 when Kingston rallied to make it 5-4 after two innings.

It was a four-run fourth that put Washington in control for good.

Jill Blair singled in a run and scored on a double by Oklahoma commitment Raylee Pogue. Two batters later, Hope Madden blasted a two-run homer to left field.

Madden drove in two runs, while Pogue and Brooke Logan drove in three apiece.

Am-Po fights off Stonewall in 9 innings

Amber-Pocasset sophomore Bailey Kite didn't have her best day in the circle, so she had to push her team to a win with her bat.

Locked in a tie game in the ninth of the Class A state quarterfinals, Kite delivered the decisive blow with a two-out RBI single during No. 2 Amber-Pocasset's 12-8 win over No. 12 Stonewall.

“It was just something I had to do for my teammates,” Kite said. “If I'm not doing well in the circle, then I've got to be good somewhere else.

“My teammates were there for me, and they came along with the hits. We're going on to tomorrow.”

Amber-Pocasset had led 8-5 in the bottom of the seventh, but Stonewall rallied to tie the game. Amber-Pocasset scored four runs with two outs in the top of the ninth.

Sterling's Spriggs Ks 15

Sterling junior pitcher Sarah Spriggs was on.

She struck out 15 and limited No. 4 Whitesboro to four hits in No. 5 Sterling's 5-3 victory in the Class B state quarterfinals.

Sterling sophomore Reese McGuire delivered the big blow with a go-ahead two-run single in the top of the sixth.

That was enough for Spriggs, who allowed one earned run and two unearned.
