THE search is on to find a hero called Dave who came to the rescue of a Furness student after a terrifying M6 crash. India Grace said she experienced the scariest moment of her life when her car aquaplaned on the M6 on Monday afternoon.

The 20-year-old, of Askam, managed to stop her Ford Ka from flipping, but the car was spinning out of control until it hit the central reservation at a location southbound on the M6 between junctions 36 and 37. The shocked Edge Hill University student, who was alone in the vehicle, managed to call 999 but struggled to get the door open to get out.

Numerous cars swerved around her car, but Miss Grace said no-one stopped, apart from a driver who moved a wheel out of the way and carried on his journey. She was able to force the door open and make a gap to escape the vehicle. Miss Grace then stood next to the central reservation almost collapsing with shock and fear of being hit by a vehicle.

The geology and physical geography undergraduate was relieved when a car pulled over on the hard shoulder. The driver then risked his own safety to cross the motorway, checking on Miss Grace, take hold of her and walk her across the M6 to the hard shoulder. The mystery driver, who said he was called Dave and was from Kendal, wrapped Miss Grace in four blankets to keep her warm. He contacted the emergency services again and kept the student talking.

The driver stayed with Miss Grace while she was being checked over by paramedics. Miraculously she had walked away from the crash with only minor injuries, bumps to her head and whiplash, while the front of her car was crumpled.

Dave went one step further by retrieving Miss Grace’s bags from her vehicle and returning them to her. Miss Grace was still in shock when she thanked him and shook his hand. She now wants to find Dave and thank him, as do her family.

All she knows is he is called Dave, he is from Kendal, he drives a red car and he has dogs. Miss Grace, who had been travelling to Lancaster at the time of the incident, said: “Dave is an absolute hero. He risked his life to help me and I’m so grateful. “No-one was stopping, they were swerving around my car. I was terrified. One driver, a man in a Porsche, stopped but he shoved my wheel out of the way and carried on.

“Dave crossed the motorway, asked me if I was OK and if I could walk. He held onto me and helped me to cross the motorway. He wrapped me in four blankets, spoke to me and kept me calm. He waited with me for the ambulance and when the paramedics were checking me over.

“I feel very, very lucky that my injuries were not a lot worse, that Dave came to help me and that a car didn’t crash into me. I keep reliving things. “Dave also ran back over the motorway to my car to get my belongings. I would really like to find Dave and thank him, my family also want to thank him. When I last saw him I was in shock and didn’t say all I wanted to say. He went above and beyond for me.”

Miss Grace also felt that her late uncle, Stan Woods, of Kirkby, Liverpool had been looking over her as a guardian angel. Mr Woods had been a British banger racing champion, and Miss Grace felt that she knew how to stay calm behind the wheel when the drama unfolded and stop the car from flipping because of advice he had given her.
