Top-seeded Serena Williams was tested by an old rival, but she again proved why she is the best player of her generation and perhaps the greatest of all time.

Williams came back to take the final two sets against Victoria Azarenka 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the semifinals of the 2015 Wimbledon championships on Tuesday.

Azarenka's power allowed her to contend with Williams in the first set, but ultimately the American's poise, dominant serves and accurate return game were the deciding factors. When the match was over, Azarenka gave Williams all the credit for the win:

U gotta give credit where the credit is due. Well done @serenawilliams and good luck to the rest of the tournament http://t.co/jzHhw3NX0O

Azarenka appeared to be on the brink of one of her signature emotional meltdowns after being broken in the third game of the second set. Instead, she channeled the energy into routine pep talks after each pointsuccessful or unsuccessfulas a way to keep herself motivated.

It helped avoid an unflattering outburst but didn't do much to avoid the result. Williams is now 17-3 against Azarenka in their careers.

Williams will face another longtime foe in No. 4 Maria Sharapova in the semis.

It took three sets, but Sharapova eliminated American Coco Vandeweghe 6-3, 6-7 (7-3), 6-2. The task undoubtedly gets tougher for the 28-year-old Russian. Williams has beaten Sharapova 17 of the 19 times the two have played. That includes a streak of 16 straight matches dating back to 2004.

ESPN Stats & Info adds yet another layer to Williams' dominance over Sharapova:

Nothing is ever automatic in sports, but Williams over Sharapova is as close as it gets. Bet on Williams advancing to the final.

If she makes it there, she'll face the winner of No. 13 Agnieszka Radwanska vs. No. 20 Garbine Muguruza. Radwanska outlasted American Madison Keys 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 6-3. Muguruza defeated No. 15 Timea Bacsinszky 7-5, 6-3. Radwanska looks to have regained her game after struggling mightily early in the year.

She's the smart pick to defeat Muguruza based on her more extensive experience in Grand Slam events. The finals likely represent the furthest stage either woman can reach in this year's tournament.

Williams looks too strong for anyone to handle.

As stated before, nothing is automatic, but Williams' path to a fourth consecutive Grand Slam championship looks to be without a major speed bump. Here's a look at all of the scores from both sides of the draw:

On the men's side, Novak Djokovic finished off a two-day comeback against South African Kevin Anderson. After losing the first two sets on Monday, Djokovic started his comeback by capturing the third and fourth sets before play was suspended.

He finished off his resurgent display on Tuesday with a 6-7 (6-8), 6-7 (6-8), 6-1, 6-4, 7-5 victory to move on to the men's quarterfinals. His path to a title will not be as simple as Williams'. He'll next face No. 9 Marin Cilic. If he can get by him, a potential meeting with No. 4 Stan Wawrinka is on tap.

Wawrinka takes on No. 21 Richard Gasquet on Wednesday.

Djokovic just lost to Wawrinka in the finals at the French Open.

On the lower half of the draw, the No. 2 and 4 seeds are still alive. Roger Federer will play No. 12 Gilles Simon, while Andy Murray faces unseeded Canadian Vasek Pospisil.

Unless Pospisil or Simon have two big upsets up their sleeves, Djokovic would have to face Murray or Federer for the title should he survive his own half of the quarterfinal draw.

If you were asked to bet on Djokovic or the field, in this instance, taking the field would be smarter. It's just hard to imagine him blasting past Cilic and two top-four-seeded players.

To be more specific in this prediction, Federer is the man in best position to win. He has lost just one set in what has been a virtuoso performance thus far in London. Look for he and Williams to channel some 2012 magic to take home tournament victories.
