Presbyopia is a condition of aging which occurs when we lose the
ability to see up close. After age 40, reading a menu or small
print becomes difficult. It is estimated more than 114 million
people in the United States have presbyopia. Cohen Laser and Vision
Center of Boca Raton is introducing the KAMRA corneal inlay to
South Florida. This advanced solution for presbyopia is helping
people reduce the frustration of wearing reading glasses.
“Every day I have patients begging me to help them get rid of
their reading glasses. Now, after more than 30 years in practice I
can finally offer them a solution that not only improves their
reading vision but maintains their distance vision as well,” said
Dr. G. Richard Cohen, Medical Director at Cohen Laser & Vision
Center of Boca Raton. “The KAMRA inlay is an outstanding option for
these patients.”
The KAMRA inlay is a tiny mini-ring, smaller and thinner than a
contact lens, with an opening—or pinhole—in the center. The inlay
sits in the first few layers of the eye known as the cornea, and
uses the pinhole to focus light coming into the eye. When only
focused light enters your eye, you can see clearly up close while
maintaining your distance vision.
“Recently, we did a KAMRA inlay procedure on Dawn, a
medical/surgical technician. Dawn had no issues seeing her patients
in the waiting room, but it was increasingly hard for her to see
her patients’ medical records on the computer, prescription labels
and the suturing needles for surgical instruments. She was
constantly taking her glasses on and off, and if she forgot them,
she would struggle to get through her daily routine,” said Dr.
Cohen. “Since having the KAMRA inlay procedure, Dawn now sees
great! She is glasses free and sees like a 20-year-old.”
About Presbyopia
Presbyopia, a frustratingly natural eye condition, reduces the
ability of the eye to focus on near objects. This condition occurs
when the crystalline lens of the eye loses its flexibility, making
it difficult to focus on close objects. Presbyopia may seem to
occur suddenly, but the actual loss of flexibility takes place over
a number of years, usually becoming noticeable in the early to
mid-40s. Presbyopia is not a disease and it cannot be prevented. In
the past, presbyopic patients had to rely on reading glasses or
monovision to improve their near vision. Both alternatives have
significant compromises.
To find out if the KAMRA inlay is right for you, Dr. Cohen
recommends asking your eye doctor the following questions:
- Do I have presbyopia or some other
condition?
- What are my presbyopia treatment
options?
- Are there options other than reading
glasses and contact lenses?
