Gym Class Heroes have announced plans to record a covers EP.

Frontman Travie McCoy revealed that the band will produce a collection of summer songs for a 2013 release.

"In a few weeks, we're going into the studio to record an EP of summertime anthems or cover songs," he told The Hollywood Reporter, complete with "an amazing Gym Class Heroes twist".

On which type of songs they will include in the project, he said: "You just think about songs that embody summertime. Songs that, the minute you hear them, you can smell barbecues.

"It's crazy, the list of songs that we came up with [initially] and the songs that we picked. I think it's gonna surprise a lot of people."

McCoy revealed that the group may record a cover of 'Lean on Me' by Bill Withers for the EP.

However, he added that the collection will not include collaborations with the likes of Ryan Tedder or Adam Levine, saying: "It's strictly a Gym Class affair. And I've definitely been working on my vocal chops."

Earlier this year, Gym Class Heroes released 'The Fighter' featuring One Republic's Tedder.
