Sharon battled to get her weight down over the past few years and the couple have now lost 28st to save their lives after getting fed up of being trapped in the house.

The pair opened up about their struggle to lead a healthier lifestyle on Channel 4 documentary Shut Ins.

Sharon said: "I'm the woman who can't seem to get pregnant.

"Could I give up chocolate and cake if I had a small bundle of love for the rest of my life?

"Yes! But the disappointment every month and the years of never having a stripe on a test makes me comfort eat.

“Does that make me weak? Probably. But yes I would give anything to be a mother, to be called mum.”

At her heaviest, sugar addict Sharon, 33, weighed 48 stone and she consumed tens of thousands of calories a day.

She’s now almost a third of her weight after she sat down with her doctor who advised her this was make or break time.

Her first gastric sleeve helped her lose 10 stone, but she admitted she put some of this weight back on, but a mini gastric bypass helped her reduce her weight by eight more stone.

Now she says she'd do anything to be a mum, having already lost 18st

The gastric bypass operation reduced Sharon’s stomach to a quarter of the size and cut a third out of her small intestine, meaning that she will eat less and adsorb fewer calories from the food she eats.

Following the surgery, Sharon dropped a whopping 18 stone from her heaviest and was able to get out and about on her own.

Sharon said: “I’ve never wanted to be thin because I don’t know what that’s like, I just want to be smaller than what I am so I can live more.”

But her transformation did not initially have a positive impact on former sales and marketing manager, Andrew.

The 49-year-old continued to comfort eat and pile on the pounds as his wife shed her weight.

At 37 stone he was not able to work and he was unable to leave their Cotswolds home.

Andrew told the Channel 4 documentary how his confidence was utterly shattered, saying: "My self worth is non-existent."

After his weight continued to balloon, Andrew took the difficult decision to also have bariatic surgery.

Sharon supported his decision, saying: "I want us to spend the rest of our lives together rather than me doing one thing and Andrew slowly dying."

The 49-year-old confessed his big weakness was carbs, with bread and pasta his favourites.

Sharon said: "He loves feeling full. He doesn't eat until he's hungry and then he goes hell for leather."

The couple's relationship was reportedly under strain before Andrew's operation last year in part because of their quiet sex life.

But with Andrew's weight loss, Sharon is more hopeful of becoming a mother as his libido has increased.
