Yoga outfitter Lululemon to open this fall in downtown Detroit

DETROIT - A popular yoga apparel company is opening its newest Michigan store this fall in downtown Detroit.

Lululemon Athletica, a Vancouver-based retailer, will occupy the former Kit and Ace space at 1459 Woodward Ave., just down the road from the under-construction Shinola Hotel.

The space is owned by Bedrock, Quicken Loans founder Dan Gilbert's real estate firm. The storefront exterior is covered in Lululemon-branded signs stating it will open in fall 2017.

The store is expected to open in late September, Lululemon spokesperson Meghan Chisholm confirmed in an email to MLive.

Lululemon is a "technical athletic apparel company for yoga, running, training" and more with hundreds of stores across the world.

The new store also sits on the same street as the recently-opened Under Armour, Nike, men's retailer Bonobos, Warby Parker, WeWork, Moosejaw, Avalon and others.

It is also a walk away from the Grand Circus station of the QLine streetcar, which launched in May and is offering free rides through Labor Day.

Kit and Ace, also a Vancouver-based retailer, opened in downtown in 2016 as a "technical cashmere" shop but closed its doors in Detroit and across the nation, Australia and the United Kingdom.

But the company said its showrooms in Canada will remain open and customers can continue to shop online.
