A-K Valley campus clippings: Marsico on the mark for Gannon golf

Michael Marsico had a strong debut at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference men’s golf championships.

The Gannon sophomore, a Fox Chapel graduate, tied for fifth at the PSAC championships, held Friday-Sunday at Hershey Country Club.

Marsico carded a three-round total of 230 to finish four strokes behind West Chester’s Chris Warner, the individual champion.

Football

Allegheny: Senior Tyler Balla (New Kensington/GCC) rushed for 111 yards and two touchdowns as the Gators routed Kenyon, 54-10. Sophomore Chase Balla (Valley) had a sack and an interception.

Case Western Reserve: Junior Patrick Crossey (Plum) made 11 tackles in the Spartans’ 27-14 win over Geneva on Saturday.

Cal (Pa.):  Senior Chad Garnett (Fox Chapel) had three tackles and an interception in the Vulcans’ 23-0 win over Mercyhurst, which was suspended because of weather Saturday and completed Sunday. Redshirt sophomore Tyson Hill (Valley) caught a team-high seven passes for 90 yards, including a 4-yard touchdown.

IUP: Sophomore Justice Evans (Vandergrift/Central Catholic) rushed for 140 yards and a 3-yard touchdown as the Crimson Hawks outlasted Gannon, 43-34, in a game delayed four times by weather.

Robert Morris : Sophomore Brayden Thimons (Highlands) got his first sack of the season and forced a fumble in a thrilling 49-45 victory over Central State. Thimons finished with six tackles.

Slippery Rock : Redshirt sophomore Chad Kuhn (Kiski Area) had eight tackles (1.5 tackles for loss) and a sack in a 28-13 win over Clarion.

Washington & Jefferson : Senior Cody Milsom (Knoch) finished with nine tackles (two for loss) and two pass breakups, but the Presidents lost, 27-20, to Westminster.

Women’s soccer

Chatham: Sophomore Kyla Kelley (Highlands) got her second assist of the season on a corner kick in a 2-1 victory over Waynesburg.

West Virginia Wesleyan: Junior Chelsea Hubner (Plum) leads the Mountain East Conference with a .200 goals-against average on the season, allowing just two goals in nearly 900 minutes. Her .946 save percentage ranks second in the league.

Women’s volleyball

Thiel : Freshman Courtney Grubbs (Freeport) had another big week, totaling 179 assists, 67 digs, 23 kills and 12 aces as the Tomcats went 3-2 with wins over St. Vincent, Chatham and Hilbert and losses to Bethany and Westminster. She had double-doubles with assists and digs in the 3-2 win over St. Vincent and 3-1 loss to Westminster. Senior Jess Kelley (Freeport) had 38 kills in four matches, including 15 in the St. Vincent victory.
