Prep Notebook: QB Jones among Trinity signees

Four Trinity Wildcats announced they will continue their careers at the next level.

Coming off a Class 4A state baseball championship, quarterback Ben Jones is switching his focus back to football as he prepares to lead the Birmingham-Southern offense.

Jones threw for 2,039 yards and 21 touchdowns for the Wildcats his senior season.

"Growing up, playing college football was always a dream. It was kind of surreal to know somebody would want me, and that's a great feeling. I'm excited about playing at that level and seeing what it's like," Jones said. "I watched a lot of their film, and a lot of it was short, accurate passes, which is what I like to do, with the occasional deep ball. So I felt like I fit in to what they're looking for in their quarterback."

Jones' baseball teammates Trace Johnston, Parker Watts and Charlie Leisy will continue their careers on the diamond.

Johnston signed with Southern Union. He batted .477 with 28 RBIs and had a perfect fielding percentage.

Watts signed with Mississippi College and batted .264 with 17 RBIs, and had a .929 fielding percentage. He also had a 1.08 ERA with 32 strikeouts in 32¹/₃ innings.

Leisy, who earned the save in the clinching state championship game, will walk on at Central Alabama Community College. He batted .323 with 21 RBIs.

Edgewood PG headed to Huntingdon: Edgewood point guard Jordon Edgeworth will continue his college career close to home with the Huntingdon Hawks.

Edgeworth averaged 11.9 points and 5.8 assists his senior season. The two-time Advertiser All-Metro selection helped the Wildcats to an AISA Class AA runner-up finish.

"It's a blessing. I couldn't have done any of this without, God, my family and my friends supporting me. That was one of the main reasons I decided to go was because it's close to home. My family and friends are going to be able to watch me play still. It's a blessing to be able to stay at home and still be able to play college ball," Edgeworth said. "I'm ready to play. I'm ready to get out there and work hard and start the season off."

Marbury teammates headed to Culver-Stockton: Marbury football stars Ty'Ric "T.J." Ray and Christian Mitchell both signed with Culver-Stockton College in Missouri.

Ray — a 6-foot, 195 pound athlete — amassed over 800 yards of offense while catching 12 touchdowns and running for two more.

"It's just an amazing opportunity. Coming from Marbury, not too many colleges look down here. I'm just blessed," Ray said.

Mitchell — 5-foot-11, 210 pounds — played linebacker and H-back for the Bulldogs, and was recruited as a fullback. He had 39 tackles and two interceptions, both of which were returned for touchdowns.

While they often played on the same side of the ball in practice, Ray and Mitchell did collide and time or two.

"We had a couple collisions, but he never could catch me, so we never really had that problem," Ray said.

Autauga Academy's Seymore signs with Jeff Davis CC: Autauga Academy shortstop Bryan Todd Seymore signed with Jeff Davis Community College. He batted .455 with 41 RBIs and six home runs. He also compiled a 2.41 ERA with 54 strikeouts in 32 innings on the mound.

"I didn't know what to think. I was just way more excited than a little kid during Christmas," Seymore said. "I'm just really excited to see how far I can go at the next level and see how I perform. Jefferson Davis is in a small town in Autaugaville like I'm used to, so it feels kind of like home."
