Artist returns to UAB to sign his visionary artwork

An artist returned to Birmingham Wednesday to sign his name on a massive piece of artwork just like he did 39 years ago.

Yaacov Agam created the massive, multicolor work called "Complex Vision" that has displayed on the outside of UAB Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital since 1976. It was taken down last year and restored. The sun had bleached the color from the 30-by-30-foot sculpture.

The piece was reinstalled in May. Today, Agam rode a hydraulic lift to the base of the artwork. Using a stencil and four colors of paint he signed his signature near where he first signed it in 1976.

Agam, 87, is considered a master of kinetic art, a form of art that features virtual or real movement. "Complex Vision" uses virtual movement. If you look at the piece from the right side it appears to be black and white. But as you walk in front of the artwork, different designs and colors appear. Viewed from the left side, it is comprised of vivid colors.

He traveled from France to rededicate his work.

"Complex Vision" is one of Agam's largest outdoor sculptures and has been valued at $11.9 million.

The Callahan Eye Hospital is located at 1720 University Blvd. The artwork can be easily seen from the Unity Park across the street.
